Brooklyn, NY is a hive of musical movement, continuously sending artists out into the world and bringing in talent from every corner of the globe. With all this action it is no wonder that so many incredible performances take place just outside our doors. We here at Brooklyn Exposed decided to make a short list of this month’s not-to-be-missed local concerts.

Dum Dum Girls

Feb 7, Music Hall of Williamsburg (66 N 6th Street) 9pm, $15
Harnessing the spirit of female punk bands past, the Dum Dum Girls embark on their tour, delivering a series of new songs and sounds off of their second album. This time around the ladies dabble in harmonies, ballads, and guitar solos, bringing a new depth and level of experience to the show.

Maku Soundsystem

Feb 10, Southpaw (125 Fifth Avenue, Park Slope) 9pm, $10
Ready for something a little different? Hit up Southpaw for M.A.K.U. SoundSystem and their traditional Afro-Columbian rhythms. This big band performance will feature clarinet, trombone, saxophone, and guitar, as well as Latin percussion with a rock core. The performance harnesses the sound and spirit of Columbia and pays homage to the passion of Columbian New Yorkers. Ijah Bones will warm up the crowd before the main show.

Satan Said Dance!

Feb 10, Public Assembly (70 N 6th Street, Williamsburg) 10pm, $2
Get your dubstep/electro/moombahton on all night long with this $2 back room dance party. Public Assembly will present this night as homage to the “blood drenched” cult ritual that was performed in Yonkers on February 10th of last year. The DJs (known only as Mario Bee and DJ Bones) are set to preside over the event with their “anonymous” presence, keeping the dark lords of dubstep appeased. The ritual is sure to go far into the morning hours.

Metalmeister

Feb 11, Knitting Factory (361 Metropolitan Avenue, Williamsburg) 11:59pm, $10
Knitting Factory Brooklyn is calling at metal heads with their Metalmeister event. The night will feature ear-popping music by local metal bands Radar Fiction and Deathalizer. Knitting Factory will also offer “one of their favorite party drinks” so get ready to get buzzed and have your skull crushed all on the same night.

The Queens of FELA on Broadway Celebrate The Grammys

Feb 12, Knitting Factory (361 Metropolitan Avenue, Williamsburg) 7pm, $8-$12
Fela! is a Tony Award winning Broadway show that is based on the life and music of late Nigerian singer Fela Kuti. Kuti’s son Femi has taken on the role that his father began, and continues to be a pioneering figure both in Nigerian music and in the political realm. In honor of the 2012 Grammy awards and Femi Kuti’s 3rd Grammy nomination the ladies of Fela! (Elasea Douglas, Hettie Bernhill, Abena Koomson, and Saycon Sngbloh) will be taking to the Brooklyn stage, showcasing songs from the show and Kuti’s career.  Okay, while they are not technically a band, this is still a must-see performance!

The Red Hook Ramblers Live Music With Silent Films

Feb 19, Jalopy Theatre (315 Columbia Street, Red Hook) 7pm, $10
Ever wonder what Laurel and Hardy’s Big Business would sound like if it was set to the beats of a live Dixieland band? Me neither, but this is the perfect night to find out. The Red Hook Ramblers are set to bring New Orleans to Brooklyn, blasting out their big band sound to a variety of silent films. After all who needs dialogue when you have live trumpet solos?

The Johnny Cash 80th Birthday Bash

Feb 24, The Bell House (149 Seventh Street, Gowanus)  9pm, $15-$25
Alex Battles and the Whiskey Rebellion will be leading this annual celebration of the man in black. Both nights will be filled with classic Cash tunes, played by men who are well acquainted with the infamous singer/songwriter’s style. Get ready to “Walk the Line” and toast to one of the most influential singers of the 20th century.

Yacht

Feb 26,  Music Hall of Williamsburg (66 N 6th Street, Williamsburg) 9pm, $13/$15
These Portland boys (okay, and one girl) are bringing their one of a kind electronic show to Brooklyn. Featuring unique moments like synchronized crowd waving, power-point presentations, and question and answer sessions, the Yacht shows bring new meaning to the term audience participation. The whole evening is bound to be an educational psychedelic beat heavy trip.
