Boogie Down Brooklyn Style: Five Bars Great For Dancing

(Photo: via Franklin Park)

Sometimes you just have to cut a rug. Twist and shout. Boogie down. Shake it up…  okay you get our drift. Well, no need to jet into the city for your night of grooving; Brooklyn has bars to meet all of your dancing needs. Below are five of our favorites.

Zebulon

Off the beaten path of Bedford Avenue sits a quaint little wooden bar, adorned with street art and wrought iron guarded windows. Inside there are booths as well as tables and chairs, but look to the back of the room and notice a medium-sized, raised stage and space for dancing.  A DJ booth sits to the side, and a large mirror reflects the room, or if it is late enough, reflects the many dancing bodies.  Zebulon may seem unassuming but it is a hub for those locals ready to shake a tail feather. Each night brings a different performer or DJ, offering a unique experience each time you go.  80’s beats, African Tribal, Brazilian electronica, 50’s rock, and dub step are just some of Zebulon’s offerings, basically guaranteeing a busy dance floor, and one heck of a dance-core workout.  258 Wythe Avenue, Williamsburg (Photo: Thomas Brodin)

One Last Shag

This crazy narrow bar holds within in marbled walls a crazy amount of rocking out. Pushing the hipster element into Bed-Stuy, One Last Shag offers a small amount of beers on tap, but makes up for it with their holiday lighted outdoors patio. Of course the main draw is the potential for some major booty shaking. The bar plays host to a variety of performers and music themed nights, ranging from reggae to soul and Latin beats, and, of course, the tried and true electronic music jams. With a policy of “no suits allowed” this spot can get a little focused on its local appeal, but if nothing else this makes for an entertaining evening.  348 Franklin Avenue, Bedford-Stuyvesant (Photo: One Last Shag Facebook)

Franklin Park

Franklin Park hits on something that few other bars can maintain or handle; this bar straddles the line between neighborhoods drawing in an incredible variety of people. This eclectic spot boasts a game room and a beer garden, but most importantly of all, Franklin Park offers a rotating lineup of DJ’s and performers, all set to make you sweat while on the dance floor. Latin and rap tunes intermix with electronic DJ beats, providing a little something for everyone. There are also weekly recurring performers including Shan Boogie every Friday and Little Shalimar every Saturday.  618 St. John’s Place, Crown Heights

Brooklyn Stable

Most of us don’t consider Williamsburg to be a fist pumping kind of place; however, Brooklyn Stable strives to break the mold. Occupying the former Odyssea space, this neighborhood bar turns into a lounge on the weekend, pumping out the techno and house beats. The exposed brick and leather couches still provide a low-key feel, but the music certainly says otherwise, and does so loudly. Live bands have been known to perform, but the main draw is the DJ spinning out the club-y music, providing a NYC feel here in our borough. If you work up an appetite the bar also offers some greasy satisfying bar food, ready to enjoy in Brooklyn Stable’s surprisingly spacious backyard patio space.  486 Metropolitan Avenue, Williamsburg (Photo: Brooklyn Stable Facebook)

The Woods

If you ever see girls in short dresses and high heels wandering around Williamsburg you can pretty much guarantee that they are looking for The Woods. With their huge backyard and taco truck, this bar has no shortage of people-drawing factors. But the best feature of The Woods is the DJ booth and its alternating roster of regular faces, spinning out the top ten, old school rap, and disco beats. A large flat stage offers bolder souls a spot to shake it above the inevitable massive and packed crowd, and the main dance floor stretches as far as drunken crowds allow. DJs are usually open to taking song recommendations; so don’t be afraid to make a request. This spot is also one heck of a meat market, so be prepared to make a few acquaintances.  48 South 4th Street, Williamsburg (Photo: Hey Hey Scenesters)
