Galapagos Art Space – located on Main Street in the heart of Dumbo – did us all a favor by adding Floating Kabarette to its calendar. It’s a very entertaining performance, offering a mix of burlesque, cabaret, aerialist acts, singing and dancing (or song and dance) – all combined with quirky humor from the wonderful hosts, Olga and Bjork. Floating Kabarette is a must-see.
Arriving early is best, since the first fifty people get free admission. But don’t worry, if you aren’t one of the first fifty, the admission price is only $5—and I would have paid $15.
Choice of seating is either on the second floor at intimate two and four person tables and access to a mini bar, or the main floor with a full bar and a friendly wait staff. Towards the stage and between the aisles is a lake – yes a lake! Although the venue wasn’t jam packed it certainly wasn’t lacking an audience either. Showtime began about twenty minutes off schedule, but it was ok since I was comfortably seated in a red lounge-style, high back, cushioned love seat, and entertained by the quirky hostess and host Olga and Bjork; and even a hairstylist doing free hair cuts.

In total, twelve acts were performed by eight different artists, and they were all great: Jenny Rocha and her Painted Ladies performed two dance acts – including a comical Beyonce-like dance with enhanced butts attached; an aerialist performed ever so gracefully while suspended approximately twenty feet in the air – which received several “ooohs “ and “aaahs” from the audience; a twice performed juggling act; Broadway Brassy sang a combo of rock/pop/blues with her tattooed guitarist; Olga and Bjork performed a hilarious act to the tune of “Everybody Was Kung-Fu Fighting” and a slinky female with a tall, blond Mohawk performed a sexy and sultry burlesque act – but of course you’ll need to see the performance to really get the picture!
The performances were as colorful as the costumes. My only grudge was the intermissions, which seemed to take place after every act. As the night went on, people began clearing their seats during each intermission – which were about ten minutes long.
Like me, many others remained for the entire show and enjoyed the great selection of cocktails available. The Pomegranate Martini and Dumbo Ice ‘Tee’ are a must during your visit to Galapagos. You certainly won’t find yourself asking the bartender to add more liquor.
Galapagos Art Space is a wonderful venue with friendly staff, great drinks and an affordable way to enjoy great performances without paying Broadway prices!
