Nothing defines Brooklyn’s excellence more than its great pizzerias that have been tantalizing Brooklynites’ palates for as long as I can remember.
There must be something to it, as people have been known to voyage into the borough just for a mouthwatering Sicilian or Neapolitan at one of its many fine pizzerias. Here’s a top six list of some of the best Pizza establishments the borough has to offer. Please, try not to drool!
Di Fara Pizza
At five dollars, it’s the most expensive pizza in the country, but its worth it. Owner Domenico DiMarco has made every pie since opening in the Midwood area over 40 years ago. From the basil growing near the window to its outrageous sauce, Di Fara has built its stellar reputation by using the freshest, most authentic ingredients available. The only drawback? You might have to wait over an hour to be privileged. 1424 Avenue J, Midwood.
Grimaldi’s Pizzeria
Don’t expect to get a slice at this DUMBO Pizza place; its pie ($12 and up) only policy is strictly enforced. But don’t fret, its crispy thin crust (cooked to perfection by its coal-fired brick oven) and fresh ingredients will have you experiencing pure nirvana on first bight, realizing that you need at least one pie to soothed the pizza beast within. However, just like many other great pizza joints, you might have to endure a DMV-like wait in to be served. 19 Old Fulton Street in Dumbo.
L&B Spumoni Gardens
Spumoni´s has been thriving on the strength of its Sicilian-style pizza since 1939. Smothered in deep red sauce over fresh mozzarella, that’s laying on a slightly thicker crust than the normal Brooklyn standard, the square is a must-have at this Bensonhurst family-operated restaurant. It’s almost sacrilegious to order a slice, but I’ve been known to enjoy this sinful pizza option, too. 2725 86 Street, Bensonhurst.
Totonno’s Pizzeria Napoletana
The charm of the place is the staff’s gruff Brooklyn attitude. But, because the pizza is so good, they can get away with it. Nestled in the historic neighborhood of Coney Island, this iconic pizza parlor has been serving thin-crusted pies topped with rich fresh mozzarella and whole basil leaves since 1905. 1524 Neptune Avenue, Coney Island.
Paulie Gee’s
Proven my point of Brooklyn being one of the top destinations in the world for great pizza, people come from all over the tri-state area to dine at Paulie Gee’s in Greenpoint. Featuring a Naples-imported, wood-fired pizza oven, Paulie Gee’s turns out such greats as The Mootz” (fior di latte, chopped fresh garlic, pecorino romano, olive oil, fresh basil and sea salt) with added sweet Italian fennel sausage, and the “Cherry Jones” (fior di latte, gorgonzola cheese,
prosciutto di parma, dried bing cherries and orange blossom honey). 60 Greenpoint Avenue, Greenpoint.
Da Vinci’s Pizzeria
A sentimental favorite to many Brooklynites, DaVinci’s, located on 18th Ave. in Bensonhurst, offers agrubuly one of the best Sicilians in Brooklyn at an affordable price. They never skimp on the scrumptious cheese, which complements the savory sauce perfectly.
