Walking into the grand opening of Fushimi in Williamsburg last Friday felt like walking into a psychedelic rave. This expansive, warped restaurant features glowing red lights, hand-blown glass bulbs, and strings of stainless steel beads hanging from the ceiling—a vibe that screams The Grateful Dead on ecstasy. There are also metal poles, and yes, they may remind you of strip clubs. This is the third outpost of Fushimi; the other two are located in Bay Ridge and Staten Island.
Although the décor is striking, the food happens to be rather subdued. And it’s also really superb. Japanese, Thai, and Korean flavors dominate most dishes, and French and Italian lend a gentle, helping hand. The Lobster Salad (photo left, via Fushimi) consists of luscious chunks of lobster meat and peanut shards ($12). It is lightly bathed in a flavorful mint-cilantro dressing, and an artful arrangement of avocado slivers serves as garnish. The peanut-heavy dish is still quite pleasant. Seared Sea Scallops, laid on silken cauliflower puree, are tender and mouth melting ($13). These meaty muscles are served alongside a bundle of earthy shimeji mushrooms.
A decadent Filet Mignon (photo right, via Fushimi) is rubbed with truffled wasabi butter, and paired with tender asparagus spears and mashed potatoes speckled with truffle ($25).
Sex on the Beach (photo right, via Sarah Telzak), a playfully named roll, features shrimp coated in crisp tempura batter, tuna and salmon, as well as avocado, in a creamy-wasabi citrus dressing ($13). The Herb-crusted Rack of Lamb is covered with zippy spices and Dijon mustard, and cooked to succulent, pink perfection ($26). The winner of the night, however, was meaty, buttery Chilean Sea Bass ($25). Its caramelized exterior and bath of sweet and spicy sauce adds extra loveliness to the fish.
The drink selection features a diverse range of cocktails. The Pear Martini, splashed with fresh pair juice, and the ultra-minty, lime-infused Mojito (both $10) are highly recommended.
Give yourself over to Fushimi Sushi, the food will prove delicious and satisfying. (475 Driggs Avenue, Williamsburg)
