With so much to do in Brooklyn, we took it upon ourselves to filter our all the happenings and suggest how to make the most of your weekend.
Blurghlesque: A Burlesque/Comedy Tribute to 30 Rock
9pm, Bar Matchless (557 Manhattan Ave), Tickets: $5
This burlesque event will be a tribute to 30 Rock’s Liz Lemon, Jack Donaghy, and Jenna Maroney. Performers La Maia, Vada James, Vivienne LaFlamme and more will take on the comedy with their own naughty styling, making for a night filled with sinful laughs.
Tragedy
11:59pm, Brooklyn Bowl (61 Wythe Ave), Tickets: $7-$10
Yes there is a heavy metal Bee Gees tribute band, and yes it is important that you witness their live performance. Barry Glibb, Mo’Royce Peterson, Robin Gibbens will storm the Brooklyn Bowl stage with their v-wing guitars, glitter, and skin-tight silver and gold jumpsuits. You’ll never feel the same way about “Grease is the Word” or “Stayin’ Alive”.
Nerd Nite Speed Dating
6:30pm, Galapagos Art Space (16 Main Street), Tickets: $11.11
Honoring the debut of Nerd Nite: The Magazine this evening will not only offer you the chance to find your one and only true nerd, but also entertain with presentations and a DJ dance party. So strap on your spectacles and get ready to boogie down.
New Paintings
1-6pm, Storefront Bushwick (16 Wilson Ave), Tickets: Free
Halsey Hathaway and Gary Petersen are exhibiting their oil paintings in the front room of this small local gallery. Rob de Oude’s work occupies the back walls, bringing a connection to all three of the artists’ geometric work.
Target First Saturdays at the Brooklyn Museum
5-11pm, Brooklyn Museum of Art (200 Eastern Parkway), Tickets: Free
This month’s edition of Target First Saturdays will feature the new exhibit Black Males Defying Stereotypes. The ballroom will serve as a concert-hall and dance floor, allowing patrons to get down to beats provided by Game Rebellion, Renegade Performance Group, DJ Stormin Norman, and Daniel Bernard Roumain. A fashion showcase will cap the night off.
A Man of No Importance
2pm, Gallery Players (199 14th Street), Tickets: $18
Brooklyn’s own Gallery Players have undertaken the revival of this 2002 musical by Lynn Ahrens, Stephen Flaherty and Terrence McNally. The show tells the story of the leader of an amateur theatre group in Dublin as he tries to stage a version of Salome at his church.
Fred Armisen’s Playlist Live!
8pm, Union Pool (484 Union Ave), Tickets: $8
Fred Armisen, star of Portlandia and Saturday Night Live will be in residency at Union Pool for three Sundays, kicking off tonight. There is no way to know what this quirky comedian will perform, but previous shows featured covers from Clash, Devo, and the Stranglers. Special guests to be announced.
Superbowl XLVI
It's Giants madness, and you want a front row seat. The action kicks off at 6:30pm, but that doesn’t mean you have to wait to get your day started. Whether you are ordering in for a party or headed out to party elsewhere Brooklyn Exposed has you covered.
WuBQ
Noon-7pm, Sweet Ups (277 Graham Ave), Tickets: Free
Priding itself on bringing in a crowd that varies from the hipster set, Sweet Ups boasts a soft atmosphere complete with red wallpaper, low lighting, and cheap cocktail concoctions. This day/night they will also be playing host to a barrage of Wu-Tang songs, spun by DJ Thanksgiving Brown. $1 mini-pitchers and free snacks will also be provided (while they last!)
